Rare Myrton Purkiss Decorated studio Pottery Form Listed

Vasefinder.com just listed this rare circa 1950 decorated bowl form with a start price of $195.00 and no reserve. This exact same pot is shown in our museum and is signed with Purkiss on the front and reverse, as well as a dedication and studio label is present. This is an investment grade pot and has a tight provenance to back up its estimated market value of $500-$1000. Per the Vasefinder museum, Myrton Purkiss (1912-1978) was born in British Columbia and reared in Fullerton, California, where he spent most of his life. He first studied pottery making with Glen Lukens at Fullerton High School. Later, he studied at the Chouinard and the University of Southern California, where he was once again a student of Glen Lukens. He opened his first studio in the late 1930's. He was well known for his low-fired plates, which were decorated with a crackled glaze in the style of Lukens. Per Hazel Bray, his work was sold exclusively through through the Dalzell Hatfield Galleries of Los Angeles. He exhibited at the Pacific Coast Ceramic Exhibition and Sale and the 1952 Los Angeles County Fair's 6000 Years Art in Clay. Myrton exhibited at the Syracuse Nationals from 1947-1952. His work is in the permanent collection of the Oakland Museum of Art, as well as the Everson Museum. Please see eBay auction number 140199600615 for more information.
